See what happens when you have SISTERS!

This is the inevitable outcome when your big sisters grow tired of playing hairdresser with one another! Here's just another one of those day-to-day shots of excitement (and imagination) my lovely children bring into our family. Their daddy wasn't too thrilled with the girly hairstyle Karen and Marissa gave to Luis, but after a little laugh Rick seemed to take it all in stride...followed by a little talk to the girls requesting they never do that again to their little brother. I'm gathering quite a collage of funny pics of Luis for later in life's viewing pleasure at his graduation party and/or wedding reception.

Red creme oreos are the best...

Absolutely the best, according to this little guy!

Luis and his cute little sayings

Luis' vocabulary is expanding amazingly and he talks frequently carrying on little conversations for which I usually have no idea of how to respond since I cannot understand completely what he says. Sometimes he leaves no doubt for what he is communicating. This was a little blurb of our conversation the other day:

MAMA: Luis, What does Santa Claus say?

LUIS: (Responding in a deep voice) HO, HO, HO

MAMA: That's right, my boy!

(Then Luis pointed to me and said, "MAMA says NO, NO, NO" all the while shaking his finger and bobbing his head -- then followed by a big giggle and high-fives from his Daddy.)

So while Santa says HO, HO, HO... let it be known that Luis is paying attention and knows his Mama well with her seemingly constant NO, NO, NO! Very observant little guy!!! For sure!

Happy Birthday Jesus!

As we celebrate this glorious day giving tribute to the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ, our family celebrated with much joy over the many blessings we have received throughout a year filled with so many amazing outpourings. The children had a wonderful Christmas filled with presents and homemade cookies/treats (which Luis has termed as "yum yums" and he yells persistently for them on a frequent basis). SPOILED you might say... well yes indeed he is, but why not go ahead and spoil him, right? He's just too cute and really is a good little guy in spite of his constant spoiling doled out from his Daddy mostly.

Well the kids sure enjoyed their Christmas and spent the day engaged in playing with their toys, or sometimes sneaking off in the corner to play with one of their siblings' toys.

I hope to post some pictures when I get a chance.

Hoping your family enjoyed your Christmas Day and had as much to be thankful for during this holiday season! Wishing all our friends and family a Merry Christmas and a very prosperous New Year! May your hearts be filled with the love for Christ.

Sometimes I don't really feel like blogging about my very own children, and this is just one of those entries. I want to use this opportunity to send out my congratulations to my cousin and his family who recently added to his family through the adoption of twin boys -- what little cuties they are! I'm so looking forward to our families getting together since we're now only a few hours away.

Most of my friends know how actively involved and excited I get when I learn of another family's desire to adopt... I mean, there's just a kindredship we share with all the poking and prying into our lifestyles as we meander through the home study visits, not to mention the many fingerprinting sessions and oodles of paperwork that never seems to end. I was so comforted to walk through my own adoption journey knowing that God's glory would be served through my act of obedience. I was even more pleased to see another family member walking in faith and obediently answering the call to adopt. Congratulations Cliff and Kelly and family! You radiate God's goodness through your ministry service and commitment to spread God's wishes for ALL families! Keep up the good work!

And as an added note: Congratulations to their son, Stuart, who as a high school senior carrying a 3.9 GPA, just Monday won the recognition as the BEST DEFENSIVE PLAYER in 3A FOOTBALL for Arkansas at a Hooten's State Farm award ceremony. (Division 3A has 48 teams so what a wonderful accomplishment!) Way to go, Stuart! Nice work! What an honor!

Luis and his fascination with the Farmer's Almanac

His favorite thing is to find page 2 and laugh, laugh, laugh... then do it again, over and over! What a silly boy!

Chocolatey goodness!!!

Oh how I love, love, love this little guy, Luis, and all the fun and messes that naturally come his way! What a blessing! Luis is just one of the faces that brighten the many moments of my every day! We have so much to be thankful for and we use every opportunity to show a loving Father our gratitude for His faithfulness!

Got Tagged by Wendi

Okay, so I got tagged by Wendi, so here's my response to being tagged -- a photo of Karen proudly displaying her big fish! I was so happy the picture I needed to post wasn't some ridiculous-looking photo that I might regret years down the road. (And Wendi, just gotta mention that I have some of those "no make-up" photos too, so I can certainly relate!)

Apparently the grandparents took the kids fishing at the pond at the property's edge almost every afternoon, and it seems my kids love fishing and they seem to have pretty good luck at it. Karen's picture says it all! From what I understand, she was so happy!

So now I get to tag 5 other people and have them post their TAGGED photo. Here are the rules:

Find the 6th folder in your pictures directory and post the 6th photo in it. So here are the instructions:

* Go to your sixth picture folder then pick your sixth picture.
* Pray that you remember the details.
* Post it on your blog.
* Tag 5 others, leave a comment to let them know they’ve been tagged.

So watch out my blog friends, it's my time to tag now! It's all in good fun!

My, My, My How They've Changed in One Year's Time

Not only have each of the kids matured mindwise, but they've all grown up and put on some much-needed weight. Marissa, our bio daughter, has really gone through a huge transformation this year of growing into a shapely young lady's figure shedding the baby fat and entering into the puberty-laden years (with heavy emphasis on the emotional side emerging ever-so-fast and -furious!!!) No complaints, really, because I'd be lost without her help!! She tends to Luis so very much with an eagerness to change those dirty diapers and bathe him, so I'll go easy on her.

Here's just a few of their more recent pictures. It's hard to get 4 kids together and expect all to cooperate with taking their best shot, thus the need to post 3 different pictures.

We had a wonderful night of celebrating our one year together last night. We had cheeseburgers and tater tots (what the kids wanted), with cake and ice cream for dessert, and topped off the night by watching our "Gotcha Day" videos. The kids couldn't believe how much they'd matured, and were actually a little embarrased by their behavior as captured in the videos from the first few days. Karen especially got embarrased because she really has changed so very much! I teased with her and said I planned to show this video on her wedding day. She didn't much care for that and laughed so hard pleading with me not to embarrass her in that way. It really was a fun evening -- oh, how it soothes my soul to see how much progress they've made. Saying "I'm so blessed!" just doesn't even begin to express the wonders these children all bring... BUT I'll say it anyways, "I'm So Blessed!"

Several of my Colombian adoption/blogging friends have met or are meeting their children this week and I am praying for each of these families. Thanksgiving just naturally brings about an expression of thankfulness, and paired with the wonders of seeing God's amazing matchmaking abilities, I wish upon each of these families to be filled with many blessed moments as they welcome these children into their hearts, their homes, and their lives. Congratulations to all the newly-formed families!

ONE YEAR TOGETHER AS FAMILY!

Yes, today marks that special milestone of one whole year together as a family. Where has the year gone? It seems like only yesterday when we were in Cucuta awaiting our first meeting with our children. I remember, vividly, how we awoke that morning after tossing and turning most of the night, trying to occupy the morning and early afternoon's moments but feeling the overwhelming anticipation building to that moment we'd meet our kids since the meeting wasn't set until 2pm. The moments seemed to tick slowly by, and with every breath I took, I grew more light-headed and almost sick with the wait. The clocks in our minds ticked backwards for the hours leading up to the initial meeting of the kiddos. We ventured off to breakfast that morning with the full intentions of passing the time after breakfast with a leisure swim followed by fresh showers and a relaxing primp session...at least that's how we had it planned! My gut feeling said to take showers before the breakfast, but Rick was very hungry and insisted on breakfast first. This would have worked perfectly if we hadn't gotten greeted by our new translator friend, Alexandra, who had been sent to the hotel to gather us for a meeting ASAP. Seems the kids arrived at the ICBF office much earlier than anyone had expected. So much for our leisure primp session, although I did manage to squeeze in a quick shower for myself (Gen) and our daughter, Marissa. What a crazy few moments leading up to our meeting. I've never before had anxiety attacks but I'm sure those moments of heavy breathing and almost fainting spells accounted for a huge "anxiety attack". I remember how Rick would have to remind me to breathe, at times. My stomach ached much from the erratic breathing patterns I'd grown accustomed to as the day moved on. What an experience!

Then we took the taxi ride across town to meet the kids. What a wild time! That had to be the most incredible display of pure love, and to take part in that blessing was just undescribable. We met the two foster mothers and what a great surprise because their wonderful love they clearly had for our children was so obvious. We are so grateful for their guidance and love for our children! Although our happy day was their sad day, we felt so endeared to meet the wonderful women who had taken great care of our kiddos.

We were told that when Fabian awoke that morning. he rather loudly announced for everyone else to wake up because that was the day he'd meet his daddy (in spanish, but you get the idea). SO TOUCHING! I'm almost certain that's why the children arrived much earlier than originally expected. The foster mothers just couldn't hold the children back. Fabian was so intent on meeting his new family, mostly his Dad.

Tonight we will celebrate with cake and ice cream, as we honor one year together as a family! Just a week before Thanksgiving, we have so much to be thankful for. What wonderful blessings come from the children we have been entrusted to raise, and for that we thank our loving Father above! We look forward to many, many more happy years ahead. And just one more thought... we are so very thankful we are able to celebrate this milestone in a warm climate! We don't care for the cold weather too much anymore.

(Pictures above were taken while in Cucuta, Colombia, last year.)

Too Big for His Britches

Yes, my boy Fabian sometimes acts "too big for his britches"... after all, he's just a normal little boy, but when picking out a costume this Halloween, well the literal translation took over and he really was too big for his britches. That's why the HULK costume fit him best (really, I'm not trying to throw in ALL those puns!)

See, he had always dreamed of being a POWER RANGER for Halloween. What I gather is that Colombian boys tend to view those Power Rangers as the coolest Super Heroes out there. And Fabian's fondness to Power Rangers ranks right up there pretty high, thus the desire to BE a Power Ranger for Halloween. Well, that dream ended for him after finding those cool Power Ranger costumes were a little too tight for him. As he'd try on suit after suit, convincing himself that this suit would fit better than the rest, well... none were even a close fit. These suits were so tight that at any moment he could easily belt out the chorus of "Thriller" and sound just like Michael Jackson. Three stores and five Power Ranger suits later it became clear to Fabian that there were no Power Ranger suits in his size. Luckily I found a HULK suit that would fit. He wasn't going with the HULK idea at all so I just brought the suit home with the idea that if we came across another costume he liked better, we'd take this one back. Thanks to the loving persuasion of my wonderful husband, he turned Fabian onto actually liking the HULK. The Hulk just fits Fabian's personality much more than the Power Rangers ever did because Fabian has always had this impulsive way of getting in your face and growling a big 'ole GGGRRRRRRR backed by a mean face! This is a behavior we have worked hard to curb and he's made great progress throughout the year, although sometimes the behavior still surfaces. It is my understanding that there was a teenage boy in the foster home Karen and Fabian were in and this was the teenager's way of showing dominance. There were no adult males in the foster home so this is easy to picture happening.

The kids are growing so much... Fabian especially. He's putting on more weight than his sister is. And Marissa is developing such a figure at such a fast rate, it's almost hard to imagine. Over the past year her body went through so much transformation. She went from this pudgy little girl to a slim, young lady almost overnight. She's matured mindwise and I really depend on her to help me so much. I'd be lost without her. As thanks for all her hard work, in addition to allowance she gets extra gifts or treats usually consisting of High School Musical items or trinkets. Over the weekend I took Marissa and Karen to the movies to see HSM 3, which they loved! They said it was their favorite out of the High School Musical series. It was an enjoyable afternoon... a huge contribution to a fun day! The boys stayed home and watched an action movie at home as they enjoyed their "guy time" together. I'm so thankful for those little moments we get to bond with our children!

Halloween came and went

Halloween at our house donned appearances from the Hulk (Fabian), then there was a pirate (Marissa), Snow White (Karen), and the most gentle little Lion (Luis). We had a nice Halloween with the kids loading up on a lot of candy. We didn't go door to door but just went downtown which seemed to be the happening-est function in town with the exception of a local church carnival that was offering a chance at a surprise giveaway of a brand new vehicle to some lucky family. What a way to bless someone. We didn't join in their festivities but we passed by on the way home and they seemed to have quite a turnout. The kids had fun as we stumbled upon a youth performance of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Ichabod Crane". That was entertaining and it even starred our neighbor, one of Marissa's friends, in it.

Fast Forward one year from our REFERRAL date

Has it really been a year ago since we "got the call"? Unbelievable how an entire year has passed since we "got the call" letting us know of our 3 wonderful children in Colombia awaiting our arrival as their forever family! I knew I was feeling nostalgic today for some reason, and I'm positive this is the reason why. Just a year ago today was when we learned of the sibling group that Colombia had matched especially for us, however they were a little off with their information. The agency goofed on reporting back their information. They told us there were 3 children, which turned out correct; 2 boys, 1 girl, again correct; ages 9, 7, and 9 months old, and again were correct; BUT they said the baby was the girl - INCORRECT. We learned the next day that the youngest, the baby, was a boy and that the girl was the 7-year old.

What was so odd about that situation is how God prepared our hearts to know the agency had given us wrong information. See, upon receiving THE CALL, I called Rick with the information. I then called my mother, then my mother-in-law with the news. Upon relaying the information to my mother-in-law I told her the only thing I knew were the ages and genders of the children. Upon telling her that the baby was a little girl, she remarked, "Oh, too bad that baby isn't a little boy." I thought, "What a bold statement -- what a brash statement!", and at the time I was a bit offended, after all I was feeling so thankful for God's blessings in bringing our children forth, and couldn't understand why my mother-in-law would interject the desire to be choosy over whether the baby was a girl or a boy. Perhaps she said it because she had only known how to raise boys and had no girls to raise. Or perhaps it was God's way of showing me what was to come...

Well, that night as I slept (amongst the tossing and turning most of the night), I dreamt a crazy dream. I awoke remembering the dream which took us to Colombia and as we prepared ourselves for the meeting of our children, we were meeting with the Colombian officials who continued to stall the meeting. We were so eager to meet our children and could hear their voices around the corner in the next room but the Colombian and adoption agency officials would not allow us to meet them just yet. They kept saying they needed to tell us more of the children's situation, etc., but they found it hard to explain to us. Finally one of the Colombian officials told us that they didn't know how to tell us this but they had it wrong all along... that the baby girl wasn't a baby girl but instead was a baby boy. So in the dream I was shocked and doing my best to handle the fact that we now had a baby boy waiting in the next room, and that all the pink dresses and patent leathers we had brought would not work, we'd now need boy stuff... then I awoke. I shared the silly dream with Rick and he blamed it completely on what his mom's statement of wishing it was a baby boy. Reality indicates the dream was God's way of preparing us for what was to come, because later that day we received a phone call from our agency letting us know they confused the children and their ages, and confirmed that the baby was a boy, not a baby girl as earlier indicated. (But who knew because I do encounter some far-fetched dreams from time to time.)

When they called with the confirmed information on the children, we were also told of their names, which stayed the same upon adopting them. We chose to keep their first and middle birth names intact in order to preserve their Colombian-born identities, being respectful to their birthmother for naming them, and remaining consistent with their identities as they've always known them. This just worked right for our family and upon hearing each child's name was something we never wished to change. Actually, God answered prayers as I lay in bed that night before that crazy dream. I prayed that the little girl would have the name Dayana. Why, you ask? Well, since my middle name is Diane, I prayed my adopted daughter would come to us with the spanish version which is Dayana, and prayers were answered! Thank you Jesus! The next day brought news that my daughter's name is Karen Dayana! Cool, huh! Isn't God just so awesome?!!!!

Such blessings have come in knowing these three children:

******* Fabian Jesus, Karen Dayana, and Luis Alejandro *******

They have been little treasures to our family and to their sister, Marissa Helena, We have so much to be thankful for! What a joy to be bonded together as a forever family! WOW, hard to believe it's approaching one year together as we will celebrate that milestone next month. Where does the time go? It definitely feels like it's going Fast Forward.

Seasons of Change

Ahhhh, the change of seasons. Well, here in Alaska it happens fast! All the sudden it's summer which means long days and little darkness, then it turns rainy for weeks and before you know it the blustery days set in eventually. Fall does create a majestic backdrop to the scenic Alaska landscape, and every Fall I cannot help but think of a funny thing Marissa told her Grandma on a "day-trip" they took years ago to view a nearby glacier to gaze at the lovely Fall sights when Marissa was about 4 years old. As they drove and oooohhhed and aaaahhhhed at the beautiful tree colorations, Marissa became very excited and blurted out, "GRANDMA, God is in the trees!" Well, my mother was driving along and wondered what her granddaughter was talking about because Marissa continued to say this over and over... "Grandma, can't you see it? God is in the trees!" Well, my mother kept looking in the directions Marissa was peering, but she saw nothing but trees. After seeking and searching the treeline for God to appear, and dealing with Marissa growing more and more agitated because her Grandma obviously didn't see God in those trees, the mystery was finally solved but it took some ingenuity and creative thinking. What she was saying was that GOLD is in the trees, and with her little accent back then it made it virtually impossible to understand her words at times.

So every Fall I am reminded that GOD is in the trees, and it brings a smile to my face knowing that a loving Father is nearby! To my many friends out there, remind yourselves of this as you take in the beauty of the Fall colors, and perhaps even search the treeline for God, or Zacchaeus, or simply marvel at the gold in the trees.

(Just an added note: We have settled into our indefinite relocation at the warmer weather residence and I'll be blogging on that soon, for the many people who have been out there praying for our family. The kids and I love the sunshine and warmth, and I'm so excited to have my family reunited, although I am back in Alaska currently packing and putting the final touches to unfinished business I left behind. I'll again meet back up with the family next week.)

Happy Birthday to Karen

8 years old now and one birthday celebration down, one more big one to go! We figure when all the family is together (which is on the horizon, yippee) we'll have a large celebration with the requested "princess" theme with pizza, cake, and ice cream (oh, and the presents -- don't forget them). These have been the same requests throughout the year of what Karen wants for her birthday celebration.

Karen did manage to embarrass me a little when she opened up the card from her Grandma. Upon opening it, she immediately began to shake it around asking, "What, no dollars?" Americanized, yes, and spoiled, maybe, and obviously now needing some fine tuning on her manners. Of course, Grandma thought it was so cute but I was rather embarrassed. That girl was seriously searching that card and envelope for money and wondered how her Grandma could've forgotten to enclose it! Silly girl!

We had a nice little celebration on Karen's birthday Sunday with a cake we baked and a few presents. The overwhelming excitement leading up to her birthday seems to have sparked an emotional side to her. She's cried several times today admitting she misses all those people from Colombia who meant so much to her. She's really expressed missing her birthmom several times in the past 2 days. She is easily the most tender of all of my children. She wondered if I thought her birthmom would remember her or remember it was her birthday. What a loaded question; what a touching time! I can't help but feel the pain their birthmom must truly feel, not really knowing the destiny of her birthchildren and holding their memory only in her heart and within her dreams. Our family prays nightly together for their birthmother, but my prayer to this dear woman is ask God to grant comfort and assuredness that her children are loved and cared for in ways that she wasn't able to fulfill. May she always be blessed by the love and protection of an endearing Father above! I pray my children will forever embrace a special love for their birthmother. On behalf of my children, Mami E -- we send hugs from afar, from a Half A Sky Away, all the way from Alaska to Colombia.

Luis and his Grandma

Luis loves his Grandma, that's for sure. He's going to miss her but knows she'll come for visits. We'll all miss you Grandma!

Hilarious SNL skit

What a hilarious skit put on by Saturday Night Live opening the show on Sept. 13th! Making it even more incredible is knowing how Sarah has joked in the past when asked who she would be for Halloween, and many times the standard answer was she was going as Tina Fey because not too much prep would be involved in pulling it off. How neat to see Tina Fey actually impersonating my friend. What a full twist in how life has played out for Sarah. I'm so proud of her! Back to the SNL skit, what a hoot! I was rolling with laughter! YEAH, and I can see Russia from my house too! (Okay, so that's a stretch from the truth, but it was funny in the skit.)

Great work to the SNL crew who put that together. Funny stuff, and in this election we need to pause momentarily to laugh at the funny stuff, then jump right back into the hard-pressing issues because there are so many of those to deal with this time around.

GO SARAH GO!!!

All this attention in a little town

This town has seen its fair share of reporters milling around, and crawling around in Sarah and Todd's bushes from what they say. They seem to want to find anything, just anything, of substance on Sarah Palin. I'll bet it's just super frustrating to find that she's just an honest, genuine person with brains and attractive looks sporting styling glasses and a well-coifed up 'do (as she prefers most of the time). And as for that Trooper, ex-brother-in-law incident... pretty much all the town will tell you he's a total jerk, just bad news and a loser.

One thing that is neat is the news coverage showing our town. There's so much talk of my little town nowadays and it really has grown so much in the time since Sarah was Mayor here. I'm glad you folks are able to see a bit of the landscape, the beautiful mountain peaks and wonderful lakes here. I'm sure they won't stop filming anytime soon so if you haven't caught one of the news stories showing Wasilla yet, there's still hope. The kids sure think it's neat that everyone around the country is seeing their little Alaskan town.

I see my pastor has posted a little blurb on the church website stating that Sarah and family several years ago attended regularly at Church on the Rock. I'm sure he and the church staff, and the congregation, were getting hounded by reporters. I'm sure the reporters felt duped once the wikipedia site finally listed her home church correctly. It took about 5 days to work that through. Maybe we'll have visitors with big cameras and mics this Sunday, or maybe not. We'll see!

I'm proud of Sarah for doing so well on her speech night. I never doubted her confidence because this is just the challenge she's up for. She's always been known to pull off the most challenging of things with such grace. What a classy woman! My only observation through her speech was that they might have coached her a bit just to get her point across with the few remarks she made upon driving certain Obama issues in. They probably coached her a little on being just a tad bit tougher in her presentation at those times, but it was needed to sell her speech. And it worked! She delivered! What a truly remarkable person she really is.

I'm so thrilled she's now into the hand-shaking, actual meeting one-on-one with the nation's townfolks! She's so gifted in that type of setting. It does shape up for an interesting showdown in the next 2 months.

Here's a picture of the family at the Alaska State Fair last week when we were there.
It was fun. The kids enjoyed the rides. It was their first time to ride big rides other than the bumper cars they rode in Colombia. Fabian loved the bumper cars at the Fair because he got to drive by himself. He really thought he was tough! The girls loved the CRAZY and WILD rides and Fabian didn't like them too much and would only tolerate them. Karen is clearly my daredevil child. She had her hands up on some of the scariest ones when Fabian was gritting his teeth and making a terrible face with a two-handed death grip on the handlebar. No screams of enjoyment came out of Fabian's mouth, but Karen and Missy -- just the opposite. They were begging for more rides all day long.

We enjoyed all sorts of Fair food. So many firsts for them! They loved the Dippin' Dots and said that surprisingly the Elephant Ears tasted a lot like bread. Hmmm, now imagine that? The biggest hit was the huge bag of Kettle Corn we got just before leaving. Marissa really thought it was cool that the lady who waited on us and bagged our Kettle Corn was one of our friends from church and we talked to her for a while... okay, okay, the real story is that this lady is the Grandma of the guy from church Marissa's had a crush on for almost 2 years now. I guess that's really big stuff to a 10 year old experiencing an outrageous crush on a boy... to talk to his Grandma is just outta- this-world cool!

Back to the Kettle Corn, all my kids love it but one of them inhales it. Luis would grab a huge handful, lean his head back and pop his whole fistful of Kettle Corn in his mouth, all the while using his other hand to scoop up another handful. Both hands were working systematically like a well-maintained machine. He would swat at his sisters and brothers hands to get at the popcorn. I had never seen anything like it. There is no way he ever learned anything of this sort from us. I just don't allow it. But it was interesting for a moment to watch the baby just devouring popcorn like that. Shocking! So many things come so naturally to that little guy that makes me shake my head wondering why. Don't count me out as being weird or anything, but with the high percentage of times I marvel at this little guys wonders, I can't help but question if he has seen life before. Weird, I know, but so many things have happened in such a short time together to raise our eyebrows. Maybe I'll try to better explain it sometime.

Interesting church service today

Okay, for starters, I knew today's church service would be interesting and inspiring just because the hometown's rising star made her national level debut as the VP nomination just 2 days ago. Most all the local folks, myself included, are still riding the wave of elation that particular news brought. We've all known for years she was headed for greatness and the path was paved for her moment to shine. Her admirable leadership qualities were needed at a greater level than that of just a gubernatorial role, and pleasingly so, those attributes were noticed by those officials whom she could best serve on a national level with. With the GOP VP choice made, it certainly has put our town on the map and has brought a flurry of reporters to the area looking for any tidbit of information relating to Sarah Palin. Well, even in church today it didn't slow the flow of reporters. They were there taping. There were a few present and recording during the worship portion and special prayer led to pray wisdom and guidance be granted to our country's leadership, and for those coastal communities and the safety of the people of the Gulf Coast areas who may be impacted by Hurricane Gustav.

In the past 2 days I had run across several news stories, bio information, internet articles and blog entries claiming that the home church of the Palin family is the same one I attend. If so, I certainly didn't know it and I've attended there for over 3 years. Cool though! I had always thought her family attended locally at another bible-based church. Apparently not, unless someone has miscommunicated the information leaked to the media. Whatever the case, we don't mind the coverage and exposure. (And to set the record straight, our church is a non-denominational bible-believing church where all faiths are welcome! I continue to read reports pegging her affiliation as a Pentecostal and a so-called "holy roller", which is not an accurate description. Hopefully a few reporters gathered a little bit of actual insight today in order to more appropriately set that record straight.) With the many new faces and growth within our church congregation it certainly would not be surprising to have her in regular attendance when she's here in the area. Then there's the fact that she could very likely attend the early morning service, one I've attended only a handful of times in the past few years. I like my late church service and with several kids to get ready, it's almost necessary to have that extra idle time to prepare ourselves and the kids on Sunday mornings.

Now onto another subject:

Please, please pray for those people who may be in harms way from Hurricane Gustav. Pray that this powerful storm diminish before landfall to lighten the devastation it could very well cause. Please Lord, we ask that you protect and keep watch over the many people in that region. May those who need you turn to you in their time of trouble, dear Savior. May they find comfort in knowing You are a faithful God, and to find peace in all that may be lost, that it will be restored, but according to Your plan and Your timing, dear Father!

(I actually took a few moments today following prayer just to reflect on what it might have been to endure the hardships caused from Hurricane Katrina. The pictures from the devastation played through my mind repeatedly. I could not even begin to understand what and how those individuals felt then, and continue to feel just 3 years later. My prayers go out to everyone in that region over this Labor Day holiday.)

Authenticated Awakening

PICTURE THIS:

After an already disruptive night of sleep of tossing and turning, checking on the kids and a stupid toy intermittently loudly singing the alphabet song during the night, the phone rings just before 6 A.M. Startling, yes you betcha, and as I gather my senses it appears to be my mother’s cell number. Strangely odd and a bit frightening as I then remember my mother has many flight segments today. Very quickly the answering machine scoops up the call and I hear my mother’s voice say, “I’m in between flights and you might want to go watch the TV!” Still groggy I have so many questions… Why is she calling me this early in the morning? Is everything okay? Why did she say to go watch TV? Then I began to panic remembering the last time she had called that early in the morning hours was on 9/11 years ago, with a very similar message… “You should turn on the TV!”

So I turn on the TV not knowing what the hoopla was all about. What a blessing to see that the breaking news and all the buzz was centered around speculation that our Governor here in Alaska, Sarah Palin, was rumored to soon be named as John McCain’s choice as a running mate in the 2008 presidential candidacy. WOW, what incredible news! Her name had been tossed about from time to time as a potential vice president choice, but lately there hadn’t been much mention of her even being considered.

As the historic events and news coverage began to unravel this morning, and the speculation gave way to authentication, I couldn’t help but take this moment to exclaim how praiseworthy this event truly is for every citizen of this great land we call the United States of America. Not only is Sarah Palin a friend to almost all who know her, but I speak with firsthand knowledge that she’s definitely authentic – the real deal -- raised with family values and holds a true sense of ethics, is a devout Christian woman, and a proud mother and businesswoman, who just happens to have a keen sense of public servanthood and politics among the many other admirable qualities. Her energy adds to the revitalization of the McCain ticket in ways the nation will soon get an opportunity to see, and I couldn’t be more proud of her for being McCain’s choice for vice president. Much credit is due to the McCain camp for following their heart (and obviously their faith) in making this decision. It will be an interesting few months gearing up to the election. You can bet I’ll have a sign pledging my support. How often does one actually know the VP choice? What a day!!! I keep thinking back to my April 18th blog entry devoted to her surprise announcement that she was pregnant and of the birth of Trig, her 5th child. Even then she was a longshot VP choice, but now that’s authenticated.

As the day’s events unraveled, I found myself celebrating victoriously and reflecting back on so many little milestones and moments of faith leading up to this nomination. I thought back a few years ago when myself and Marissa planned to volunteer as sign-wavers in Sarah’s run for Governor. Viewing it from a civics lesson perspective with an added bonus of knowing the candidate, Marissa embraced the opportunity. Marissa cried and cried on voting day when she was too ill and I wouldn’t allow her to participate out in the snow and rain. She proudly hung her PALIN FOR GOVERNOR signs in her bedroom window, in the kitchen window, and for months she would comment as cars drove past, “I wonder if that person driving by noticed the campaign signs?” She would watch attentively as each car passed to see if they had peered at the signs in the window, and if they had, she was ecstatic as she kept a tally! What a joy to witness the innocence of a child so proud of their campaign contribution! She also wanted to write a letter to Sarah Palin telling her how much she admired her and was campaigning for her. The letter never got sent, but upon learning of Marissa’s intentions Sarah embraced Marissa’s deeds with a huge thanks and a warm hug.

Sarah Palin is one tough cookie, has a knack for serving the public, and is well suited for the position of V.P. although her credentials already are being hotly debated. My hopes are that Americans will openly embrace her wholehearted qualities and see that Sarah Palin is ready to lead.

Last year she was a last-minute guest speaker (said she wouldn’t have missed it for the world) at a local ONE LORD SUNDAY service whereby local church services were held in one large convention center and over 20 local churches of differing religious affiliations closed their regular sanctuary doors unite together to worship as a community. The entire ceremony was extremely effective and representive of many faiths and language interpretations were even translated into Russian for their faithful followers. Without a doubt, a moving experience! Sarah’s message was so powerful during her few moments at the podium. Citing mainly from the influential scriptures contained in Psalm 127, she so eloquently explained how her faith and religious principles have contributed to her past and future successes.

Please accept my apologies if I have bored anyone with my political views. I mean nothing offensive to the other parties in this election process. Clearly the U.S. is headed for an energized leadership whomever is voted in. This post is not meant to take on a divisive role in the upcoming election, but is meant to share a personal perspective into the confidence I place in Sarah Palin. She offers an authenticated awakening of the spirit of this great land we live in. God Bless the U.S.

God-given Resemblances

As I look at the last picture I posted of the kids (Marissa, Fabian, and Karen), I have to thank God for matching these children together. There's such an incredible resemblance between Fabian and Karen (our Colombian-born children) to that of our U.S.-born daugther, Marissa. Is it just me or does anyone else see their resemblance?

We do serve an Awesome God because clearly He is to credit for orchestrating such a remarkable resemblance in my childrens' features. Not that it matters how they look because they are my children and I love each of them just the same, but I can't help but marvel at His wonders.

Photos from community celebration, fireworks

I sure wish my pictures of the fireworks would have come out better. The battery was running low on the camera and no matter how much I would prepare for that perfect shot, it just never happened to turn out like I wished. All fizzle and no flare, but oh well...action shots are not my specialty and add to that my dislike for the loud noises associated with fireworks which might explain the lack of good photos. The fireworks display was wonderful this year which really says a lot because year after year, this display is rumored to be the best one in Alaska. Partly because it's the only area of Alaska that allows fireworks stands and most of the actual celebration is funded from tax monies derived from the fireworks stands themselves. However, this year it was questionable whether or not the fireworks display would match those shows in the past years because of the unexpected death last year of the primary supplier of the fireworks for the celebration. His unexpected death left the remaining fireworks stands all under the same ownership and offered no competition to the big business of fireworks dealers. Happily so, they did not cut back on the quality of the fireworks display even after solidifying a statewide monopoly on their products.

And the festival itself was very enjoyable. I wish we'd have had the time to join in all the free things. We missed out on the bounce house because they were closing right as we got there, the pony rides, and the facepainting. The kids did get to go for a horse-drawn buggy ride which they thoroughly enjoyed. Oh and they got to pet a few of the animals -- sheep, goats, and a miniature horse. Fabian just loves horses so he was disappointed he didn't get to ride the horse. We did eat heartily to the free bar-b-q and I'm proud to say we were the only family I really saw that didn't load our plates with more than one sandwich, one bag of chips, one soda, and one ice cream cone apiece. It was sad to see so many others hoarding food in such an unmannerly way. So very, very sad to watch children take on the inconsiderate actions of their parents and think nothing of it. My kids were growing halos almost instantly amongst that crowd. Over and over I was reminded how much the Alaskan people have really changed in such a short timeframe. Sure you've got some great people here in Alaska still, but more and more it is changing. It wasn't always this cut-throat and was once filled with kindness and consideration to strangers. Well, clearly not anymore!!

Fabian also liked the live music. There was a live band playing and Fabian was eye-balling the lead singer lady who even Karen and Marissa remarked on how her cleavage was popped out enormously. My kids...they notice everything!

Meeting one of their Mom's schoolmates

The kids and I met up with a friend of mine from high school. We were also roommates for a little while when she was attending college here in Anchorage. We lost track of each other for many years in between but have in the past few years gotten together for a few momentous occasions. This time she got to meet the kids for the first time. Most of our other get-togethers have included Bernie's sister, Donnie, up for a visit to Alaska. Those visits are usually spent full of re-living crazy tales of the past and filled with much laughter and good times.

It was sure a good time meeting up with Bernie at the Lone Star Steakhouse, even though I wasn't quite quick enough to alert the food server I wished to pay. My treat next time! It was a kids-eat-free night at Lone Star, but still. I should have been more on my feet with jumping first! I think I was more pre-occupied with watching over all my children who were a little shocked because we haven't dined in a restaurant in a few months now. Karen sure loved shelling the peanuts there too. She could have sit there all day feasting on peanuts if we'd have let her. Fabian didn't care for them, but that's just how he is... you know, his way of thinking is it requires a little work to get to the good part so forget about it.

It was so funny when I was originally calling Bernie to see if she'd like to meet up. I asked the kids to be quiet while mami made a phone call. They all wanted to know, "Who are you calling Mom?" I said, "A friend of mine named Bernie." Fabian started laughing saying "Hey everybody, Mom's calling Barney (thinking the purple dinosaur)". So I corrected him emphasizing BERNIE, not BARNEY. Then he got this quizzical look on his face and blurted out, "MOM -- why are you calling another guy?" He was convinced Bernie was a guy's name and he'd better tell his Daddy that Mommy was calling to set up some dinner date with another guy. My Fabian, what a funny little fella! At least he's now understanding that his Mom only has eyes for his Dad, and vice versa. While in Colombia he never quite grasped the fact that Dad was only attracted to Mom, and no others, (even though the women there would strut around very scantily clothed trying every possible way to garner a glance their way). Chalk it up as a victory through a tough little cultural difference. Oh, I'm so happy to see this change in our boy, Fabian.

More of SCRUFFY

Even Scruffy loves to watch the Olympics! Here he is watching Michael Phelps go for Gold! He loves to play, too, and these are just some of his favorite toys. I'm told he's not too fond of the toy that squeaks but he's warming up to it. Getting brave! Rick says he's a smart little dog and is picking things up rather quickly. That's good because with some luck, by the time we are there, Rick will already have him completely lined out on the rules.

Cute little guy, don't you think? And I have to say ths is just another fine example of how God shows us His ways are better. Rick and I have always swore we'd never ever have a chihuahua. Marissa from time to time has asked for one and our response was always, "Not until you're grown up!" Both Rick and I have relatives with chihuahua dogs and still we've always felt and spoke negatively about that particular breed of dogs. Plain and simple, chihuahuas were never one of our favorites even though we're both dog loving people. God certainly has a way of making you see things His way. This is just another example of how we've been shown by God not to be judgemental people biased in our thoughts. I cannot even count the number of times God has actually turned our thoughts on different subjects. Just when we think we have it figured out, God comes along and changes our way of thinking! How grateful we are to have a loving Father that puts us back on track, firmly on His path we are to follow! "Never say never" fits appropriately once again! Scruffy is just one of the many little blessings we might have missed out on without an openness to follow the Lord. Cute little blessing full of energy and feistiness!

Meet the new puppy, SCRUFFY!

This is our newest member of the family, SCRUFFY, a mix of Chihuahua and Schnauzer pup. Rick got him specifically for Marissa since she had wanted a dog of her own for quite some time and since she has proven time and again to be such a wonderful help to me (her mom) daily and is such a huge help with the other kids, rewarding her with a puppy was only fitting. Actually it was all Rick's idea so she surely has daddy wrapped around her finger. She is a great helper and things would go completely awry without her willingness to assist me. I've grown to depend on her help every day. She's only 10 years old but what a mature little girl she's become. I'm so very proud of her and love her dearly. Her help is such a bonus in helping me manage through the daily grind.

Her puppy, Scruffy, is waiting for her in Texas where we will soon be going to. Rick's job is there in Texas for a little while so we are so excited to be relocating soon to where the entire family will be together! I'm thrilled to again have my husband's help and to have him around us constantly. We've made too many sacrifices apart from each other and it will be good to again have the family intact! With Rick being around, Marissa will be free to devote her time to training her puppy and focus on doing little girl things instead of being the helper. I praise God for bringing my family together! Now if I can manage to stay focused to get the many things accomplished before my trip there I'll be doing magnificent.

18 months old today -- Hard to believe

Wow, where has the time gone? Luis is 18 months old today! He is growing up so fast. He still has only gained 2 pounds since arriving home to the U.S. back in December. He now weighs 21 pounds. He's grown a little in length and I'm just now beginning to see him putting on weight in his arms and legs. There's never been any baby fat on this little guy and I'm hoping he'll gain a little. Now that he's moving around the house at will, actually running most of the time, he's getting more fit. His feet are growing a little but not much. He still fits into his size 3 shoes but I have a feeling that won't be for too much longer. In clothes he mostly fits into size 9 months, and almost fits into most of his size 12 mos. clothing. His belly size is just now round enough to hold up most of his size 12 mos. clothing.

Here's the series of photos that I snapped off earlier this week that led to Luis' goofy poses. After a few smiles and red lights going off in front of his face, he'd had enough and resorted to goofiness in hopes that his mami would stop. He's such a character. He has this playful side to him that is so cute. He still prefers Marissa over Karen or Fabian mainly because she helps out so much when it comes to feeding, changing diapers, and playing with him. He loves his dog, Rascal, although only feels safe when petting the dog from the other side of the gate. Rascal is a very lovable, energetic pug and has been known to jump on Luis from time to time.

Life is busy at our house, and we're so blessed to have fun-loving children. Besides being filled with love, the one other characteristic we wished present in our children was to have fun-loving personalities. Praise God for answering prayers. We clearly have that in our family and it sure makes life super enjoyable!

Goofing off

Luis was tired of me clicking pictures of him so he decided to do outlandish little boy things probably wishing I'd stop with the pictures. I did... stopped with the pictures and switched to movie mode. He's such a silly guy!

(Please note I'm just recovering from a nasty cold thus the deep voice that sounds nothing like my normal voice, but you gotta love the video content. It features Luis at his finest! What a little character he is. He sure fits right in with our family, for sure!)

At times it's hard to believe that Luis is 17 months old now. He is growing up so so so so much and does some of the cutest things! He, along with his brother and sisters, bring so much joy to my life! God's wonders are magnificent and I praise Him all the time for these wonderul blessings I get to share my life with!

Waiting for a parade

What a good life when you've got Grandma in Alaska by your side, and bags in hand as you wait for the 4th of July parade to begin. (At least that's what our kids were thinking!) Before the parade the announcer asked for some of the kids in the audience to come forward and tell what they most enjoyed about the 4th of July. Most responded with enjoying their freedom or something along that avenue. I asked our kids what they thought. Fabian replied emphatically, "the candy!" (Perhaps a few more lessons in patriotism are in store for the boy. Seriously!)We actually forgot to bring a bag for Luis and he seemed to figure out he was getting passed by after that first piece of candy was handed out. That was about the time he grew tired of wearing his hat so Grandma took hold of his hat which then doubled as candy holder. The little guy was excited then! It was a fun day! We were happy their Grandma was there to spend it with us even though we broke one of her chairs and she got a little sunburned at the picnic.

Recap of the last few weeks

I'll try to cover a few of the things that have been happening lately, and I'll start by saying that my life's been very hectic and it's bound to grow in intensity as the month carries out. Last month Rick left for a very welcomed job change. His work is still within the construction field but the job he's currently on offers a much warmer climate than Alaska. It's in Texas! He's been gone for a few weeks now and we hope to join up with him in the next few months. We are looking forward to spending some of the colder Alaskan winter months in a much warmer climate. We are extremely excited that our family will soon take on a more normalized appearance with both parents present and under the same roof. Hallelujah, prayers were certainly answered there! See, for many years now Rick has worked out of town, usually at remote access jobs, where no visitors are even allowed. Our only time together was his off-time which quite often consisted of him resting for days from the long hitch he'd just pulled. Sometimes he would work almost non-stop for 4 to 5 months without seeing his family, come home for a break for 5 days, then back to work again for another long hitch. (It's quite similar to the military life, and I have all respect and gratitude for the great service given by our armed forces members along with the families that stand proudly beside them and their jobs) I grew accustomed to Rick's working lifestyle but it wasn't ideal for our children's sake. They needed their father present in a more consistent manner, which became so much more evident following our adoption. Our new kids didn't understand why their Dad's job called for him to be gone away from them so much. It was a tough few months but the kids did eventually grow to understand and handle the absences better. We're now counting down the days until we meet up! Oh, can't wait for that day!!

Just before Rick got the job in Texas we found out we had a buyer for our house. We have been occupying our time recently in getting ready for the house sale. Clearing out our stuff is presenting a huge challenge! We have entirely too much stuff! I still have weeks of work to be done. One thing's for certain -- I hope to never live in a cluttered environment ever again! (I'm sure that comment got huge smiles from my husband, and my in-laws. Maybe even a good belly laugh.) It's true so just believe me! I have a tendency to allow myself to take on too much anyways, just my nature, but never again will I let things get out of control or to the point that they bog me down! I really am looking forward to simplicity and more organization surrounding me! I wonder, will my husband, my mom, or my friends recognize the new me? I'm sure my kids will find more enjoyment in the new me! I'm mostly looking forward to spending more one-on-one time with my heavenly Father, and these changes will free up more time making that possible!

I've posted a few pictures of Luis after we went to the 4th of July parade. The kids enjoyed watching the parade, especially since each one gathered a full bag of candy from just sitting there looking charming. In their viewpoint, not a bad take for an hour's worth of entertainment. This year we chose to watch the parade instead of walk in the parade with our church as we have in the past years. I thought the kids would find it more entertaining this year to watch than to participate in it and I was right! They especially loved seeing all their church friends walking by either waving or coming over for hugs. I have to admit, I really enjoyed just watching this year too! Probably the most memorable thing during the parade was that a huge bald eagle soared just overhead almost the whole duration. It flew very low and just circled around and around overhead. Just a beautiful sight to see and so significant of a time!

After the parade we went to a free picnic at the community park. Thankfully the weather forecasters had it all wrong and the weather for that day turned out remarkably nice and hot! We even got a little sunburn from sitting in the park enjoying fellowship and free hot dogs as we celebrated our day of freedom!

We didn't do any fireworks this year and the kids couldn't quite understand why not. Very simply put... we live only a block or two from the fireworks stands and the only legal place to shoot fireworks off is in our little community. Why would we want to buy any fireworks when they are all around us? Boom after boom, bang after bang, for days! Just look out any window in the house and you'll find a free fireworks demonstration! For days it's like this, and well into all hours of the night too. It's the one true week I wish I didn't live here! Sleep deprivation and me equals crankiness, no doubt about it! Not to mention I've never really been into fireworks in the first place. Love looking at them but could do without the noise! All in all, the kids understood why mom wouldn't buy them any fireworks after they got their 24/7 fireworks fix for that entire week around that holiday!

I'll have more to report on soccer games because all three (Marissa, Fabian, and Karen) are playing this year, but that's for another post.
God Bless,
Genece

Monday, July 7, 2008

I'm sure hoping the problems with uploading pictures and videos has fixed itself. It seems to be working now after I tried several attempts over the weekend with no success. I'm sure glad it's up now and hope to post a few pictures from the weekend festivities. (As soon as I find a free moment later in the day, that is.)
